Horses & Ponies

The Ormiston Family have been breeding Highland Ponies in Badenoch for 6 generations and have the oldest bloodlines in one family in this breed. There are written records of the Ormiston Family breeding Highland Ponies going back to the 1850s.

The family were also the originators of Pony Trekking in partnership with the Scottish Sports Council in Newtonmore in 1952 and still have around 60-80 horses and ponies for breeding and working. The main pony trekking operation was run from the Balavil Arms Hotel in Newtonmore and also at different times from: Aviemore Centre, Ruthven at Kingussie, Strathmashie at Laggan, and Camperdown Park in Dundee.

There is always a good selection of horses and ponies for sale and they have been exported all over the world. Most of the ponies we have are Highlands but we also have Cleveland Bay and other crosses.

The Ormiston Family are usually known for the Croila Stud name but they also register ponies with the following prefix/suffix's: Gaick, Glentromie, Creag Dhubh, Strathmashie and Cairngorm. Gaick belonged to old Edward (Great Grandfather) and is now used by Dochy, Glentromie was used by Cameron, Creag Dhubh by Ruaridh, Strathmashie was the farm we had in Laggan and Fergie will use Cairngorm.

Ruaridh also keeps a Shetland Pony Stallion and has some Shetlands for sale at present.
